Medical Research
|
Action Medical Research is the UK's most forward thinking charity. We believe diseases and disabilities can be beaten, and through our medical research we are creating a healthier future for everyone.Action Medical Research is unique. Other medical charities have a single focus - either on a particular disease, or age group, or a specific hospital. Action Medical Research is looking for answers to a wide range of diseases and conditions that affect young and old. We have the broadest research remit of any medical charity which relies on voluntary support.
We played a crucial role in developing the polio vaccine in the UK, ultrasound scanning in pregnancy, hip replacement surgery and more.
Touching Tiny Lives is the charity's major campaign to help sick and vulnerable babies. We aim to raise £3 million for vital new research to help prevent premature birth and life-threatening pregnancy complications.

Spinal Research – fighting paralysis…and
winning
Spinal Research aims to find ways to repair spinal cord injury and to
reverse the paralysis that results from it. Based in the UK and
recognised as a leader in its field, Spinal Research funds
groundbreaking projects at scientific and medical institutions around
the world. Following momentous progress in the laboratory, we are now at
the second stage of the planned move to the launch of clinical trials
with paralysed volunteers.
These trials will test innovative treatments that could repair damage in
the human spinal cord, and so restore sensation and movement.

Lupus is now recognised
as an important and common illness of modern times. It is a disease in
which the immune system goes ‘wrong’ and becomes overactive. It can
affect any organ of the body. Because the symptoms can be so diverse,
including for example; fatigue, rashes, allergies, depression and kidney
failure it is called the ‘great mimic’. Currently lupus is incurable. The Lupus unit at St
Thomas’ Hospital opened in 1985 and is now recognised throughout the
world for its clinics, its teaching and its research. The St
Thomas’ Lupus Trust is the charity that specifically supports
the research and the Louise Coote Lupus Unit (the only
dedicated Lupus unit in Europe) at St Thomas’. Today, our charity pays
the salaries of 3 doctors, 1 PhD and a technician as well as all the
research costs.

information for anyone who has questions or concerns about
