There are an estimated 30,000+ people
still living in the UK today who survived the polio epidemics of the
1940s and 50s for whom the polio vaccine came too late.
Polio survivors have to live with varying
degrees of disability – affecting the ability to breathe independently,
walk unaided or use hands and arms.
Whatever the degree of disability, the
majority of polio survivors now face a return of the initial symptoms in
later life resulting in pain in muscles and joints, breathing
difficulties, extreme fatigue and weakness.
The British Polio Fellowship offers
advice, information about living more positively with the effects of
polio, social support and practical assistance to polio survivors in the
UK.
