Every year a staggering one in ten of all babies in the UK – that’s around 70,000 – need special medical care when they are born. Tragically, more than 3,000 die before they reach their first birthday, and premature birth is the single biggest cause. Many more have to cope with cerebral palsy, learning difficulties or other problems for the rest of their lives. Doctors still do not fully understand what causes premature birth, and as yet there are no effective treatments to prevent premature labour. That is why the Touching Tiny Lives Campaign is so important. Action Medical Research believes more must be done to help sick and vulnerable babies.
The Touching Tiny Lives campaign is now in its third year, and is making remarkable progress. Thanks to the generosity and commitment of our supporters, we have already raised almost £2 million towards our £3 million target, and the outstanding fundraising efforts of our supporters have enabled us to fund a fantastic total of 24 new research projects, all looking for answers to premature birth and pregnancy complications.
